Sketch Models That Didn't Quite Make It...

These are the rest of my sketch models that I made for my industrial design, but for one reason or another, didn't make it to the final cut.

Final Industrial Design!

I finally finished my Industrial Design! I think it turned out absolutely awesome!

I actually made some last minute changes to it. The top of the coffee table that I was going to use is now the bottom of it. It seemed too bland and boring compared to this side of the cut wood. I decided to use this side instead because it has so much more variety to it and is very unique. It is absolutely gorgeous compared to the other side and that is why I chose to use this side instead.

It is made out of Walnut plywood that I got from Clark's Hardwoods in Houston. My return trip from Houston took me 4 and a half hours to drive instead of 1hour and 45 minutes because a major part of Highway 290 was shutdown completely and I was stuck in the middle lane for almost an hour and a half until I was actually able to move and then it took another hour to try and find an alternate route to get back to College Station.

All I have to say is that small inconvenience was well worth it to be able to make this coffee table out of that wood I bought!

One week Isn't too late is it?

The week of November 29, I mainly worked on my Industrial Design all week as much as possible. On Tuesday night, I stayed up extra late taking pictures of my Behavioral Setting and working on my portfolio. Wednesday I went to the Ranch to get my Final Industrial Design cut out and I actually was not able to work on it and had to go back later. Thursday I went to the Ranch again to finish my Design, and got very close, but had to leave it over night to finish it on Friday. Thursday night I stayed up late again to take pictures of all my projects I have done in this class. I would say that this week was one of the most exhausting weeks of my life even though this was just a glimpse of it. I survived though, and that's all that matters!

Two weeks is not really that late....

My Behavioral Setting Final Model!

This picture emphasizes the shading pattern of the driveway and parking spaces and how it protects the west side windows from the sun.

Monday, November 15, 2010

It's still Monday in Washington State, so technically this post is on time!

I have worked like crazy on my Behavioral Setting, and I think I have my floor plans complete, but I just need to fix the roof and I will start my sketch model throwaway number two!

Basic Floor Plans

West side of the Behavioral Setting without the driveway covering.

East side of the Behavioral Setting without the deck and details.
Southwest side of the Behavioral Setting.
North Side of the Behavioral Setting. Emphasizes how the roof layout works.

These renderings in sketchup were mainly done to help visualize how the roof should look. I know that it is a simple roof, without anything extremely overdone or extravagant, but I will take any input on whether it will work or not.

Final Logo Design

I have finally finished my Logo for my ENDS 105 class that I will incorporate into my Industrial Design and portfolio. It has gone through much criticism and change to become what it is now. I started off by simply drawing abstract lines and this one was actually one of the first abstracts that I drew.

I then started playing with positive and negative spaces to create a stronger design and representation of my work.

This is the basic positive and negative spaces I started to play around with. This is actually my first rendering of my final logo.

I then started to make variations to my logo, only small parts at a time and I ended up with these ones to choose from. I decided to go with my initial design instead of choosing one of the changed versions.

This is my final logo design that I have created in Adobe Illustrator. It is a positive of my logo.

This is a negative of my logo.

This post shows my train of thought in the development of my logo and how it has morphed into the last two designs.
I am free to comments and suggestions!
Thanks and Gig'Em!!

Industrial Design Preliminary 1

I have completed my first Preliminary Industrial Design and am ready to create my second!! I have to fix where the top joints connect to the top plate and make them 1/8" longer, so they do not create a gap in between the joints and the table top. I am also going to round the top board edges off, instead of having them stay as a sharp edge. I will also make the cut - out a 1/4" deep instead of an 1/8". Finally, I will get some glass to put into the 7" square cut - outs. I am envisioning a sort of wavy glass that could flow with the grain of the wood, but I am open to suggestions.

Industrial Design - Finished!!! Well, Almost....

I have finished my Industrial Design and drawn it up in AutoCad. Now all I have to do is fix it up a bit and grab a 4' x 8' piece of plywood and take it off to the Architecture Ranch to run it on the cnc router!!

Green Lines = Outside Cuts
Red Lines = Inside Cuts
Purple Lines = 1/8"  depth cut

It is going to be a coffee table that is 1'9" high and 3' by 4'. I am going to make all the scraps into a sculpture or something unique.

Symposium Thing-a-ma-bobber.... (No Class Day!!)

Instead of going to class on October 18, 2010, I was able to go to a session at the research symposium in Langford. I decided to go to the one over "Milestones in Urban Revitilization" in the Wright Gallery at 3:00 pm. This lecture was taught by June Martin. She did research over sight design and development in East Athens, Georgia. It was mainly done in an area prone to crime and illegal activities.

This study was done over many years ranging from 1994-2009. The main target to change and improve was referred to as the iron triangle. This area was a place that had one of the highest amounts of crime related to.

They decided to improve many parts of this area, and prioritized two housing areas that were run down and utilized by many people for illegal activities. Once this was improved, they were able to bring many residents in that would never consider the area with the previous conditions.

They learned many different things that were extremely important to turn a dying neighborhood into a better living place. One of the most important lessons was to actually visit the site. They visited the area on a regular basis to see how it improved as they made certain changes and to see if they could make it better in any way.

Some East Athens Lessons Learned include:

1. Economic Improvement
2. Housing Developement
3. Improved Policing
4. Recreation and Cultural Assetts
5. Improved access to Services

They learned to get this project done they needed:
1. Commitment from Community
2. Commitment of Resources
3. Empowerment of Community

Overall I thought it was an interesting topic of how much work and the kind of decisions it takes to recreate a community and improve the basic problems it has.

Behavioral Setting Sketch Model One Throw-a-way...

This is an edited picture of my preliminary model for my behavioral setting. There is still a lot of work that I need to do on it, mainly involving scrapping the entire plans and starting over. The next one will look somewhat similar with roofing, but different floor plans, smaller square footage, and the garage will no longer be so massive.

This is the East side looking towards the lake with the deck that has not been completed yet.

This is the West side looking back towards the road. This looks nothing like how the next one will look.

Work on Behavioral Setting.

I went out and surveyed the land that this project is to be made for. It is on a lake and very nicely secluded from others. The wind generally blew from the East when I was out there.
After many bubble diagrams and scratch outs, this was the final floor plans that I had for Monday. I am definitely going to change a bunch of things up, but the general idea is there.

Let's Pretend this is from last week...

This is the final product of my micro dwelling. I had to do a bit of editing of the picture to make it look better.

This is the basic Floor Plan of my Micro Dwelling.

This is a Cross-Section of my Micro Dwelling.

This is a picture of the Micro Dwelling Model I built to 1/2" = 1'. I had to pull an all nighter to make sure it was done perfectly. It turned out much better than I expected.

Who wouldn't want R2-D2 In thier pocket?

So how awesome is this? You can now carry around a special edition of the Droid 2 from Verizon given the obvious name Droid R2-D2 Special Edition. I mean, Who wouldn't want to carry R2-D2 around in their pocket? It also comes with a bunch of cool screen savers, backgrounds, sounds, etc and with a special binocular app, that could possibly be a digital zoom. Of course, if you want to have such a cool little trinket, it doesn't come with a cheap price tag. They are going to charge $249 with a $100 mail in rebate. A little steep you say? Well, then again you get what you pay for because supposedly the roadmap says its will have a 1.2Ghz processor!!! How insane is that! Obviously if it's true, then it could possibly be worth it. Of course it's your call, whether to go nab one or not.

Micro Dwelling Designs

Floor Plan
This is the basic floor plan of the Micro Dwelling I have currently designed. The scale is 1/4" = 1'.

Cross Section
This is a cross section of my Micro Dwelling looking from the south end of the residence towards the north end on the inside. The scale is 1/4" = 1'.

East side Elevation
This is a basic elevation of the east side of my Micro Dwelling. It is not to scale. It shows the slope of how the roof will most likely be so that it can take advantage of the suns rays and get heat through the windows.

Micro Dwelling Concept

This is one concept sketch for the micro dwelling. It is in a small living environment, with only one room so far. It will have everything that is necessary to live in with the smallest amount of space possible that is still comfortable to roam around in. In this sketch there are swinging doors and pull outs that hide and expose different kinds of living environments.

Saw 'Em Off in Troy?

So this is totally Awesome! Apparently our Viz Lab is so slick that they were able to slip in a Saw 'Em Off in the official Troy trailer a long time ago! I am not sure how the boss's did not catch that, but oh well, it's pretty legit!

They claimed it is just a bull with turned down horns, not with them cut off, but we know what they intended!

Extremely Bad Cabinet Design!

So apparently anyone who has access to the Architecture C building also has access to my cabinet even though it has a lock on it. You ask why? It has three screws on the latch that you put a lock on. All someone needs is a Philips head screwdriver and voila! Your in my cabinet! Until I get a dremel and strip the screw heads, this is very frustrating!

They could have at least used irreversible screws! You still have to know where my desk is though! haha.

I'm Sorry Mactards... Apple Can't Photoshop?

Wait a second... No, that can't be right. Apple is the best for graphic design and supposedly the best for photoshop. Or are they? Check out the link and see for yourself. Apparently Apple let their Ipod touch ad launch while leaving the phone icon in! What a joke! Haha, another reason Apple sucks! Sorry if you love your mac, I don't mean to offend you, but PC's are better, and this is proof!

Ansel Adams Inspired Photography: A New Look Into Yosemite

This is actually in Taos, New Mexico, but it is still inspired by Ansel Adams.

I used the same editing technique for all of these pictures in Photoshop. I adjusted the levels first, then copied the background layer and changed it to black and white with 85% opacity. Finally I added a bluish-white layer with 5% opacity that gives it a silvery look to it as though it was taken on silver film. Ansel Adams is without a doubt one of the best Nature Photographers who ever lived and that is why I love his work. Not only did create beautiful art, but he stood for the conservation and preservation of wildlife and our land. He taught others about the importance of conservation and why we need to care for our lands. One reason is it will not be here forever, so we need to take care of it as best we can so the newer generations will be able to enjoy it as much or better than we do. Otherwise, we are only  robbing our children.

More Photography

I took this picture in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada during the spring.
I used a high ISO with an extremely long exposure. All the lights in that particular room were turned off except for the lamp. I then stood in front of the camera on the right side for half the exposure, then switched to the other side for the other half. This is one picture, not two merged. Edited in Photoshop.
This is a picture of the Oak tree in my backyard when it snowed in Dallas in the middle of March. It was taken during the middle of the night and the moon was pretty bright. I used a high ISO and a longer exposure than usual. I did edit this picture in Photoshop by changing it to a black and white photo, then putting a bluish-white layer that gives it a silvery look to it with 5% Opacity.
I took each Picture with different settings on the camera to give it the effect I was looking for. I then edited each one in Photoshop to give the picture a more dramatic effect.
